The Holy Grail in the Movies

Sought after for millenia, the holy grail has worked its way into film on numerous occasions, be it tellings of the classic quest, interesting interpretations, or complete re-imaginings. We may never get tired of seeing the holy grail in film, and with some upcoming productions rumored to be using the plot device, we may be seeing it for some years yet! Here are four memorable movies that took on the quest for the holy grail.

The Da Vinci Code. Robert Langdon’s quest for the sangreal was expertly penned by Dan Brown in 2003 and turned into an absolutely thrilling major motion picture starring Tom Hanks in 2006.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. On the hunt for his missing father Indiana Jones finds himself up against the Nazis once again, even joining in on his father’s quest for the holy grail. A true classic, this 1989 movie is well worth watching again and again.

Excalibur. Perhaps the closest it gets to the classic story of King Arthur, Merlin, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table, the critically acclaimed 1981 film still enjoys a cult following to this very day.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Not ones to take anything seriously, Monty Python’s hilarious take on the quest for the holy grail is certainly worth a mention. Non-stop action gives way to side splitting humour in this must-watch 1975 film.
