Stress is definitely known to be detrimental to the human body, but it doesn’t always have to be. When hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline get into your bloodstream to create what is known as an “adrenaline rush”, your body undergoes some temporary changes, which makes it feel like you’re superhuman. Stress is known to cause headaches and migraines, which, in turn, affects vision negatively, but when it comes to short-lived adrenaline rushes, it actually has the opposite effect. Adrenaline is originally aimed to prepare the body to respond to any potential threat. Once this hormone is released in the body, it causes the pupils to dilate which lets in more light, therefore making your vision temporarily better.
2. Better breathing
Stress tends to tighten muscles, which leaves you feeling sore. Adrenaline, on the other hand, relaxes muscles. This includes muscles in the lungs, which results in easier respiration. Since breathing is easier, it can also be a lot faster with a rush of adrenaline in your body, allowing more oxygen to enter your bloodstream. Again, as long as this is short-lived, it can be a good thing. If it lasts longer, it turns to stress and anxiety attacks which can be detrimental.
3. More focused
Research suggests that an adrenaline rush boosts cognitive function, helping you focus more on your tasks at hand. The feeling of being more focused by way of the adrenaline hormone has been compared to the boost you get when consuming coffee. This surge of energy is known to sharpen your reaction time and make you more alert as well.
4. Blocks pain
We’ve seen it in movies where somebody gets injured but their adrenaline is pumping so much that they don’t feel the pain. Adrenaline makes the body go on survival mode, which blocks pain perception until the rush is over. Once that happens, the injury is then felt, but in the meantime, adrenaline allows you to keep going.
We all experience adrenaline in one way or another. Some experience it more intensely than others, but that just depends on the person.
